While I could charge much more for my services, most authors don't have $1000+ to get their manuscript edited but still need a sharp eye to look over their story.
I prefer to edit the kinds of books I like to read (YA and Clean Romance), but I'm open to other projects as well. I've worked on YA Paranormal, YA Contemporary, YA Dystopian, YA Fantasy, Middle Grade, Clean Romance, Women’s Fiction, and Middle-Aged coming-of-age stories. I prefer to edit books that are PG-13 or cleaner. I'm not comfortable editing erotica.
I offer three rounds of edits: Content, Line, Proofread.
$0.004/word for proofreading, $0.005/word for line, $0.006/word for content. You can choose all three rounds, or any combination you’d like.
That means if you have a 50,000 word manuscript, your cost would be $200 for a proofread, $250 for a line edit, and $300 for a content edit. Or $750 for all three rounds. Have a shorter story or a novella? My minimum fee is $50.
Here's how it works. You send me the first ten pages of your manuscript, and I will send you a sample edit. If we both feel that we're a good fit for each other, you'll tell me what kind of edit(s) you're looking for, and we'll proceed with the project. The first half of my fee is due up front via PayPal. When the first half of the payment has gone through, you'll send me your project, and I'll get started.
Round One: Content Edit
I will go through your manuscript and point out inconsistencies, plot holes, structure issues. I send it back to you. You fix it and send it back for the next round.
Round Two: Line Edit
This is where I point out those clunky sentences, check for incorrect verb tenses, and help you polish up your prose until it shines. I use Track Changes in MS Word and edit right in your document. If you prefer that I only make suggestions via comment form on the side, please let me know, and I'd be happy to do that for you instead. When this round is finished, I will send it back to you. You fix it and send it back for the final round.
Round Three: Proofread
This is the final clean up. I'll check for spelling errors, punctuation, and grammatical errors. When I send the manuscript back to you, I'll send you a PayPal request for the final half.
Note: Sometimes after the Content Edit, you may send the story back with a significant word increase. If that's the case, then I'll recalculate a new price based on the new word count. If your words are reduced, the price will remain the same.

"I wanted to share my experience working with Cindy Ray Hale for a content edit of my book, Kiss Me Already. The first draft of this book was over 110K words. I write YA romance and a 110K word story is way too long for this genre. I had the brilliant idea of splitting the book in two. I did that and sent it to Beta readers. The feedback was not what I wanted. I enlisted Cindy’s services to guide me through the changes that needed to be made. Boy I’m glad I did. Seriously, I’m not sure I could have done it without her. It was tough work—a big undertaking. She pushed me beyond my comfort zone and guided me in the direction I needed to go, including getting rid of extra words that didn’t need to be there. Her knowledge of story, especially the catalyst/inciting incident and the crisis took my work to the next level.
I learned so much working with Cindy that I’ve been able to increase my productivity. Cindy Ray Hale did a fantastic job with my story and me. I’d definitely recommend working with her."
